You Connect

Living on thin ice

It’s a year since the name Bouba Le Blanc was chosen from thousands of You Connect members’ entries to be the name of the You Connect polar bear. If you haven’t seen what she’s been up to then click here to find out the latest.

Very few of us have seen a polar bear in the wild but the incredible images taken by wildlife photographers make us feel as though we have. Canon recently supported a lecture titled ‘Freeze Frame’… Living on Thin Ice where Doug Allan and Sue Flood, specialist polar region photographers, talked about a year in the life of a polar bear. Their work involves many days preparing and patiently waiting at the right spot to capture the extraordinary video footage and amazing images we see on our television screens.

Sue studied zoology at university, having announced at an early age that she would be a wildlife filmmaker. Despite the suggestion from her teacher that she try accountancy she persevered and spent 12 years with the world famous BBC Natural History Unit.

Doug read marine biology but was always more interested in diving than science. Working initially in the Antarctic, he then spent time diving in the Red Sea, so is well qualified to talk about working in extremes of temperature!
